Confessions of an Advertising Man - David Ogilvy | Rob's Best Business Books

Just like that, we have reached the end of Rob’s Best Business Books – but don’t worry, this week’s edition is one not to be missed!

Every week since December of 2020, we have been reviewing the business books that we feel are the best possible books for any entrepreneur. Whether you are starting a business, in business currently, or even just working in sales; we believe these books that when read, digested and the ideas implemented you will find yourself well on the way towards success.

We promised you that this week’s book is a belter, and we are not going to let you down! This week, we are taking a look at Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy.

As an advertising genius, and perhaps one of the greatest marketers of our time, David Ogilvy is admired by many and his works, ideas and thoughts are still studied and worshiped to this day. Confessions of an Advertising Man gives the reader that all important insight into one of businesses greatest minds.

Put by Amazon:

“’We admire people who work hard, who are objective and thorough. We detest office politicians, toadies, bullies, and pompous asses. We abhor ruthlessness. The way up our ladder is open to everybody. In promoting people to top jobs, we are influenced as much by their character as anything else.’ – David Ogilvy

David Ogilvy was considered the ‘father of advertising’ and a creative genius by many of the biggest global brands. First published in 1963, this seminal book revolutionised the world of advertising and became a bible for the 1960s ad generation. It also became an international bestseller, translated into 14 languages. Fizzing with Ogilvy’s pioneering ideas and inspirational philosophy, it covers not only advertising, but also people management, corporate ethics, and office politics, and forms an essential blueprint for good practice in business.”

This book is for more than people in marketing. Each chapter comes with it a very important lesson for any business including how to get clients, how to keep clients, how to write potent copy and much more. Put simply, it doesn’t matter what kind of business you are in, you will always find that sales, marketing and advertising is always going to be some of the most important tasks. So if you are doing those activities yourself, then this book will give you the ideas on what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it. If you are hiring someone to do it on your behalf, then this book will at least give your key elements to know how others should be doing things and will allow you to throw your hat into the mix.

Although there is no order to the books we have reviewed, this book perhaps is up there as one of our favourites as a truly motivational, inspirational read that is full of fantastic thoughts and ideas that are timeless.
